The Snow Queen

Paul’s CD of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen (BMG/Catalyst) is to be performed at Cadogan Hall, London on the 9th and 10th December, by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and narrated by Juliet Stevenson. The show was premiered at the Barbican Hall in December 2003, when Sam Marlowe wrote in The Times:

‘At this semi-staged concert performance — its world premiere — a huge screen showed video images of the sunlit woods and meadows of Kay and Gerda’s home, of snowy peaks, frozen wastes and dark skies filled with stars or rolling storm clouds......These visuals perfectly matched Joyce’s music — swooping minor-key strings and voices, and simple, affecting songs of “A boy and a girl/ An ordinary world/ Of secret dreams and make-believe”
... the piece has enormous charm and this performance was hard to resist. On a stage flooded with lilac light the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Ian Hughes, played with gusto and the London Voices and Burntwood School Girls’ Choir, singing, shining-eyed, for all they were worth, were uplifting’

A one-hour television adaptation of The Snow Queen is planned for HCA’s bicentennial in 2005.
